Article 2: Languages

The official languages of the European Union are Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Irish Gaelic1, Italian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Maltese, Polish, Portuguese, Slovenian, Slovak, Spanish & Swedish 2. Citizens have the right to address European Institutions and receive a response from them in any of those languages. Legislation is published in all official languages.
The working language(s) of the institutions are defined in their rules of procedure and are English, French and German3.
- From 1st January 2007
- Extra languages to be put in when the Union grows.
- From when the Union grows, extra working languages will be added, if the Union agrees to it.
