Talk:CHAPTER I - THE INSTITUTIONAL FRAMEWORK

From Wikitution

Wouldn't it be better, when the Commission is elected by the Parliament? The Council is the representation of the members states, isn't that enough? 80.130.201.102 07:56, 5 Aug 2005 (CEST)

Hmmm... The problem as I see it is that the Commission as currently set up functions more as the Presidency of the EU and needs to have a check on the Parliament (at the same time the Parliament should be strengthened). It develops and enforces laws (although I think the parliament has to have more input eventually). Personally, I think the Council and the Commission should just be merged, giving control of the Commission to the member states and letting each European government change its member at any time (while returning Commission membership to 25). The current dual selection process is not very democratic anyway and certainly unclear. Why not stop the charade of selection, let the nation states choose the Commissioners, but make the lawmaking process much more democratic? The parliament could still approve the cabinet type ministers of the head of the Commission. This would also force European parties to be much more invested in the EU elections, at the same time making the Commission always accountable to the member states. 68.237.46.104 21:07, 5 Aug 2005 (CEST)
